DINK Retirement in Your 50s

Your 50s are about catch-up contributions, fine-tuning your portfolio, and preparing for the transition into double-income no kids retirement.

Use Catch-Up Contributions

Once you turn 50, you can make extra contributions to 401(k)s and IRAs. These catch-up limits are meaningful—use them. Both spouses can use catch-ups, which is a departure from single-earner or single-saver households; as a DINK couple, you can each max out catch-ups, a DINK-specific opportunity that can add tens of thousands more to retirement savings each year.

Shift Toward Preservation

You're closer to retirement, so it's time to gradually reduce equity exposure and add bonds or other lower-risk assets. You don't need to be conservative overnight, but avoid taking big risks with money you'll need in the next decade.

Lock In Your Retirement Timeline

Decide when you each plan to stop working and how you'll cover healthcare before Medicare at 65. Model different scenarios: retiring together vs. staggering, claiming Social Security early vs. waiting. Run the numbers so you're not guessing.

Pay Down Remaining Debt

Ideally, enter retirement without a mortgage or other large debts. Use your 50s to accelerate payoff if you're behind, or stay on track so you're debt-free by your target date.
