DINK Retirement 60 and Beyond
In your 60s and beyond, focus on smart withdrawals, Social Security, and healthcare so you can enjoy your double-income no kids retirement with confidence.
Plan Your Withdrawals
Once you're living off savings, the order of withdrawals matters. Generally, tap taxable accounts first, then traditional IRA/401(k), and preserve Roth for last—or for heirs. Required minimum distributions (RMDs) start at 73; factor those in so you're not surprised.
Optimize Social Security
You can claim as early as 62 or wait until 70 for higher benefits. Having two benefit streams is a DINK-specific situation; as a double-income no kids couple, claiming strategies (e.g., one spouse early, one delayed) are especially relevant and can maximize lifetime income and survivor benefits. Use the Social Security calculator to compare options.
Stay On Top of Healthcare
Before 65, you'll need your own coverage—COBRA, marketplace plans, or retiree health benefits. Budget for premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Once you're on Medicare, understand Parts A, B, and D, plus Medigap or Medicare Advantage, and how they fit your DINK retirement lifestyle.
Review Your Plan Regularly
Inflation, market swings, and life changes can shift your trajectory. Revisit your withdrawal rate, spending, and portfolio at least annually. Adjust as needed so your DINK retirement stays sustainable for the long run.
