DINK Retirement in Your 40s

Your 40s are a crucial decade for DINK retirement. Ramp up savings, optimize taxes, and refine your double-income no kids retirement plan.

Ramp Up Your Savings

By now you've likely seen salary growth and more stability. Use it. Increase 401(k) and IRA contributions each year. Being able to save a larger share of income is a DINK advantage; as a double-income no kids couple, you can often save more than families with dependents—best practice is to put that capacity to use.

Optimize for Taxes

Balance traditional (pre-tax) and Roth (after-tax) accounts. Traditional contributions lower your taxable income now; Roth gives you tax-free growth and withdrawals later. With two earners, tax optimization is often more impactful for DINKs than for single-earner households—the same traditional vs. Roth logic applies, but the stakes are higher, so strategic use of both can meaningfully reduce your lifetime tax bill.

Revisit Your Asset Allocation

You still have 20+ years until retirement, so staying largely in stocks usually makes sense. But it's a good time to dial back risk slightly if you've been very aggressive. Review your mix annually and rebalance as needed.

Plan for the Transition

Start thinking about when you want to retire and what that looks like. Will you both stop at the same time? Do you need healthcare before Medicare? Rough out a timeline and savings target so you can course-correct in your 50s.
